BACKGROUND - The (EPA) Environmental Protection Agency has mandated that all on road diesel vehicles
manufactured in model year 2010 or later must be equipped with technology to reduce NOx emissions. The EPA has been
mandating gasoline and diesel emissions for years. It is estimated that by the beginning of 2010, 65 trucks will
emit the same amount of air pollutants as 1 truck did in 1988. The latest standards in place require that NOx
emissions be removed from the air because they contribute to global warming, acid rain, as well as atmospheric
particles that can cause visual impairment. NOx is formed when fuel is burned at high temperatures. In the USA,
emissions from vehicles are regulated by the EPA’s Clean Air Act. Two technologies are
in place today to achieve the requirements set forth by the EPA; Advanced EGR (International/Navistar) and SCR
(Selective Catalytic Reduction) which utilizes DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid).
